Tremors Viaduct

Model Designing Event

Engineering problems are under-defined, there are many solutions, good, bad and indifferent. The art is to arrive at a good solution. This is a creative activity, involving imagination, intuition and deliberate choice.

Problem Statement

In this event Participants have to design and build a Bascule bridge (double leaf) using Popsicle sticks which should be able to pass the given object and carry a given load.

  • Each team should be of maximum 4 members.
  • Materials to be used: Popsicle sticks, syringes and Fevicol of SH grade.
  • Use of any other adhesive, etc. is prohibited and participants using it will be disqualified from the event.
  • All the members of the structure must be such that the moment of inertia must be minimum in the direction of loading.
  • All the models must be taken for the self-weighing during the specified period of time (any entry after that won’t be accepted and would be disqualified).
  • No changes in the model after the self-weighing would be allowed and any team doing so without the permission of the core committee member would be disqualified.
  • The decision of the judges and core committee will be final regarding any discrepancy on the spot or before the event.

  • OUT TO OUT LENGTH OF THE BRIDGE MUST BE 100 cm
  • Considering Base plate as foundation level, High flood level is 15 cm, free board is 3 cm and road level is 30 cm.
  • Popsicle Stick:
  • Maximum length 115 mm, width 13 mm and thickness 3 mm.
  • The Popsicle sticks can be cut or trimmed to any shape or size.
  • SH grade Fevicol must be used only to build the structure.
    Girder specifications:
  • Thickness of any member should not exceed 3 Popsicle stick.
  • Single Bracings are allowed in the girder of the bridge.
  • There should not be any bracing as viewed in the plan.
  • Grooves in the structure are not allowed.
  • All the members of the structure must be such that the moment of inertia must be minimum in the direction of loading.
  • Only SH grade Fevicol can be used as Glue.
  • Total Length of one girder should not exceed 50 cm.
  • The no. of panels in one Girder should not be more than 5. (total 10 in two girder)
  • Width of girder must be 8 cm (i/i)
  • Height/Depth of the girder must be 12 cm (o/o)
  • Use of ball bearing is not allowed.
  • The deck (road level) should be at the height of 30 cm from the base-plate.
  • Angle of opening must be more than 45 degree.
  • Specifications for Hinge Mechanism:
  • Participants can use any type of hinge mechanism.
  • Grooves are allowed to equip the hinge mechanism.
  • Specifications for Columns:
  • The design of Columns has to be open-web.
  • Thickness of any member should not exceed 3 Popsicle sticks.
  • All the Panels of vertical member must have same alignment.
  • Cross Bracings are allowed up to 30 cm.
  • All the members of the structure must be such that the moment of inertia must be minimum in the direction of loading.
  • There should not be any bracing as viewed in the plan.
  • The height of the stand columns should be 50 cm.
  • No. of panels must not be more than 5
  • The size of stand columns should be 12*12 (l*b) o/o
  • Stand columns must be fixed with the base plate (ply wood of 6 mm thickness and 30cm*30cm cross section) for each leaves separately.
  • For attaching stand columns with base plate- nut/bolt mechanism or clamps can be used.
  • Grooves in the structure are not allowed.
  • Use of ball bearing is not allowed.
  • Only SH grade Fevicol can be used as Glue.
  • Specifications For Hydraulic Mechanism :
  • Maximum 4 Syringes can be used for hydraulic mechanism.
  • Participants must attach the hydraulic mechanism with the column.
  • Only two member can operate the hydraulic mechanism.
  • Minimum distance between Syringe and base of column is 5 cm.

    Round 1:
  • Dimension and Hydraulic Mechanism of Model will be checked.
  • Round 2:
  • Vessel of X height will be passed under the bridge after lifting of the girders.
  • Round 3:
  • Point load/udl will be applied on the bridge deck chosen by Core Committee. The point load/udl will be equal to 1.5 times the self-weight of the bridge along with the base plate.
  • Point load will be increased up to the failure of the model.
  • The judging sheet will be based on the formula given below.
