Does it ring a bell? Maybe yes after seeing the title :P .It's the symbol which we didn't know existed till 2007-08. Thanks to our "beloved" social media, hashtags now hold an important part in our lives, rather in our "social" lives. But very few of us know the actual use of a hashtag.

Understanding the hashtag:

1. Hashtags are simple keywords preceded by a hash symbol that makes them searchable and linkable. Eg: many people use hashtags to identify what's going on at events, emergencies & for following breaking news.

Clicking on a hashtag gives you a real time feed of all tweets using that hashtag.

4 ways to avoid being a #Facebook #hashtag #douchebag:

1. Don't use hashtags in every post. Remember, the two cardinal rules of Facebook posts are: (i) mix it up (ii) less is more Only use a hashtag when there's a chance for another person to use the same one.
2. No hashtag hijacking! A hashtag hijacker is someone who uses a hashtag that has nothing to do with the post. (Of you do this, you are the very definition of douche bag!) The proper etiquette is to use a hashtag only if it's relevant to
(i) your business
(ii) your post
3. Don't hashtag senseless words First of all, no one is searching for #huzzah or any other superfluous word and even if they are, they are definitely not looking for your business.
4. Don't use too many hashtags in one post. #using #4 #or #more #hashtags #in #a #single #post #distracts #the #very #people #you #are #supposed #to #be #engaging. (Moreover, how does the above line seems to you? Repulsive? Irritating? Funny? That's exactly how we feel!)
This madness has to stop. Our news feeds are flooded with hashtags. Before you decide to hit "enter"and release that post, take a moment. Think before you decide to annoy the rest of the world.

Trending hashtags: #swag: face it swaggers, #swag came and went. If you are still referring to yourself as having #swag, 2011 called and wants its hashtag back.
#truestory: when people use #truestory, they say completely believable things, #truestory. unless you are tweeting before a jury, no one wants to know you took a shower this morning. #truestory.
#selfie: selfie reinforces a rule of overused hashtags. If it's expressing something obvious, you shouldn't use it.
#justsayin: when most people use #justsayin, they usually don't even realize it- if you are saying something, we probably already know you are just saying it.
#nooffense: if you are about to say something offensive of internet, someone will probably take offense to it. Dropping a #nooffense is not going to help it.
